Now I know we have a lot of Miley haters here at the moment but what are your thoughts on the film, her aside?

I'm torn. On the one hand, I want to see how Miley does in something that isn't so Disney-fied, and on the other, I don't like Nicholas Sparks. Not because his stories aren't good, but because they are all so sad. I don't like movies that make me cry. Haha

I've seen the previews a couple times now and I totally want to see this movie. I do expect to cry cuz yeah it is Nicholas Sparks but I'm really excited to see Miley in a different role. Plus I love Greg Kinnear. I have this feeling that this could be one of the great Nicholas Sparks movies, the way The Notebook and A Walk to Remember are. I certainly hope so. Its been a long time since a romance came out that reaches the level of those movies.

You know, I still have never seen The Notebook. Haha. A Walk to Remember was such a good movie though. I saw it before I read the book and was really disappointed with the book after that. But yeah, the more previews I see for it, the more I want to see it.

Oh you so have to see The Notebook! So wonderful.
I think most of Nicholas Spark's books are better as movies. Not all the movies are good of course (hello, Message in a Bottle). But its like they're such sweet (and sappy) love stories, they can be hard to read in a book for me. But with the right cast, the movie versions can turn out beautiful.

I like Miley. I think her parents make some stupid decisions in how they choose to raise a 16 year old but I still like Miley.

I'm a huge Nicholas Sparks fan and this is the first book of his that had me in tears! (Note to self, never EVER read a Nicholas Sparks book on the train coming home from work in peak hour ever again!) A Walk To Remember I came close but not quite, so it will be interesting to see how The Last Song translates on screen. I haven't seen Dear John but it's coming out for me this week so I'll definitely be checking it out!

I like Miley. I think her parents make some stupid decisions in how they choose to raise a 16 year old but I still like Miley. I agree. I can't really fault her for making mistakes when I think she's a product of her environment. Plus, there are only a few performers who I dislike so much it would make me not want to see a project they participate in.

You know, something else that was recently brought to my attention about Miley was that she's got the Disney curse too. As in Disney tends to psychotically market their stars and send them out in public constantly. Disney's pretty cool with their stars being in the magazines and blogs all the time. That has to wear on a kid, especially when their lesser known costars can probably still shop at the mall with their friends. That would make me want to be more out there & rebellious just to (ironically) get some privacy. And i can't believe I'm saying this but as much as I love Selena Gomez and her character, I think Miley is better in keeping in touch with her fans. Like when Miley was on twitter she would actually answer questions and talk to fans. Selena pretty much just updates on her professional life. That's totally her prerogative but I do think Miley's pretty cool in that aspect.

Again, shockingly, I agree! Haha.
Okay, so this is completely unrelated to The Last Song, but...
Disney's got an amazing marketing/publicity team. They've got the routine down when they pick a new "it girl" or when they launch a new series. It actually doesn't surprise me that when people initially break away from Disney there's this lull where they aren't doing a lot of work. I think the public becomes saturated with them, and it can take a while for them to get back in the game. Hilary Duff's a pretty good example of that.
I do think that this generation of the Disney stars, Miley included, is being smart in one aspect. Almost all of them are trying to do non Disney projects while still working for the network, so they're more likely to transition to "regular" media. You've got Miley and Selena, as well as Brenda Song doing movies for other studios (unless Romona and Beezus is actually Disney owned and I'm not remembering that). Emily Osment chose to sign with a music label not related to Disney or Hollywood Records (also owned by Disney). David Henrie's been working on his own directing/producing projects, mainly on the internet. The only person I can think of who has fully embraced Disney is Mitchel Musso. He keeps doing series and movies for them and he's signed to their label, which I find kind of funny because he likes to be very um, non Disney like in his live shows.

So since we'd veered off topic here to thoughts on Miley, I was really impressed by her interview on Ellen. Its on the Portrait blog if anyone wants to watch it. Ellen asked her about twitter and why she quit and Miley was really mature about it. She said she was sick of people complaining about having no privacy and then they'd tell people all the details about their lives. Then she realized that she was doing the same thing and so she made the decision to actually try to make her private life private. That in itself was mature I thought. But then Ellen asked her about the hate comments she got for her tweets supporting gay marriage and I felt like Miley gave her opinion very maturely. It really made it seem like she's grown up and that maybe its the people who interview her who insist on acting like she's still the immature 15 year old and not a young adult. I'd encourage Miley haters to watch the interview.
