This isn't really to discuss what happened on each since the shows have their own threads but more an observation.
After watching all the season finales I care about (sorry 90210 & Melrose Place), I found there's a couple key differences within the shows. Most people have loved the Supernatural, Smallville, and Vampire Diaries finales while disliking One Tree Hill and hating Gossip Girl. I think there's 2 things that were different. (Besides the whole supernatural style shows versus soapy style) 1) Character development matters and those first shows did that. Like Tess reaped the rewards of all her doubletiming. Damon's humanity was developed over several episodes and he still didn't totally change and Haley's depression wasn't over in a heartbeat. 2) OMG moments are great but they have to make sense within the scope of the show. Gossip Girl felt more like they were just throwing things out there instead of a real piece of a story.

I was actually pretty disappointed with Smallville. I have been most of this season. There's just something really disconnected about the characters. I don't know what it is. Even with Ollie and Chloe. I really liked them until they got together and then I was really disappointed. I was expecting some sweeping, over the top finale from the show like they normally do but there really wasn't much happening. I think the bit with Ollie was the only thing that managed to change my heartrate.
I think (with the exception of the end) I'd probably rank OTH higher then Smallville.
And I don't watch Supernatural so I can't comment on that but OMG (or should I say OMFG considering the subject?) on Gossip Girl. That was seriously bad and yet very consistent. That show has been all over the place this season. I wish there was a storyline that would carry through for more then two episodes and I'm getting seriously sick of the couple swapping (*cough*Dan*cough*).
It actually took me two weeks to get around to watching the second to last episode just because I've stopped caring so dramatically. I'm not sure I'll even watch next season. I used to love GG but I'm starting to like 90210 a whole lot more. It's like they've swapped around in my esteem.

I actually don't watch Supernatural either (scares me) but from my friends who do watch it, they said it was very well done and really pulled together the mythology of this season in particular but also storylines through all 5 seasons as well. And had plenty of shocking but not out of place moments.
Smallville, well I'm a Chlollie shipper so I like that stuff but I do get that it bugs a lot of people. For me, the finale seemed to fit the way the season has been. Not always exciting (unfortunately) but consistent. It hasn't been my favorite season, I actually loved the 8th season except for the finale. But the finale for this season was consistent. And I liked that they clearly considered fans wishes in not killing Chloe despite that being hinted at earlier in the season. (That's also something I liked hearing about Supernatural in that they gave Mischa Collins a recurring role instead of the short guest spot after fans wanted more of the character.)
But Gossip Girl?! It was yeah totally consistent in that its completely inconsistent. That whole political scandal had so much potential to teach Serena an important lesson and yet nothing happened. There's been no consistency, Dan's slutting it up and all individual stories. But really the most ridiculous was the throwing in all these OMFG moments with no real substance behind them. The Georgina plot is the only one I'm halfway interested in.

I'm a Chlollie shipper too I just didn't like the way they handled them at first. I'm starting to warm to them now. I think it was just the way they got together that took away from their appeal for awhile.
I think the main thing with Smallville is a lot of the characters have been hard to like lately. It works with their development and what they've been through, they've just all had harder edges and been standoffish with one another. Even though I didn't really watch the show in it's early seasons I sometimes miss the bright yellow and red school lockers and all the color and cheer the show had in it's early days. It's like Goth Smallville now but without the black lipstick.

I would so be okay with throwing out that stupid black trenchcoat! haha
I do get the annoyance with how Chloe & Oliver got together. I don't so much mind the whole start of it being more a friends with benefits thing just because I'm sure its tough to have a romance between a comic book character and someone who only exists on Smallville. But I think since it was very much a move for fans, it would have been nice to have a little more lead in, a few more intimate moments instead of just oh hey btw, Chlollie's happening and its just about the sex. At least give us the scene where they realized there was a physical attraction.

I don't think I've watched Smallville since the second or third season. It's not that it's not a good show. It's just that it was something I could easily drop from my TV schedule at the time. I used to watch so much more television than I do now, so some stuff had to go. But, since you guys don't watch Supernatural and I do, I thought I could chime in on that one. I've watched that since the beginning. (Some of the episodes with my eyes half closed because they were so creepy, but for the most part, not too scary for me.) I really like the show in general just because of how the writers have worked their mythology. They've taken recognizable myths and religious beliefs from around the world and successfully integrated them into modern America. And it's really interesting. I though, I wasn't all that happy with the finale. I liked it from the mythological stand point, and how they tied up the loose ends to the over arching mystery and everything. But, from a relationship aspect, not so much. It was too neat, and kind of out of left field, in my opinion. I'm sure a lot of other people were happy with it though. I haven't watched Gossip Girl at all this season. I had fully planned on it, but never really got around to it. I think I'm over the scandalous OMG moments. I read the synopsis of the finale, and a lot of fan reactions to it. And I kind of understand all of the multiple points of view that are coming in for it. I think certain aspects of the show have gone a little too far, but I also think the way the writers have taken the story in the finale will enable them to circle back around next season and temper some of the craziness... if that makes sense.
